Field to Console Operator Transition

Course Objectives:

This course is designed for Outside Operators who are beginning to learn the job of the Console Operator, a transition that requires a complete change in thinking.

This course will cover the roles and responsibilities of the Console Operator. It will also introduce the basic concepts of process control, advanced process control and DMC control. Several interactive process control troubleshooting exercises are included that build on the knowledge base of the outside operator and illustrate the nuances of the problems that the Console Operator must resolve.

Basic DCS skills are covered to ensure that trainees learn the DCS and are able to use it to its fullest advantage.

Communication skills for the Console Operator are also an important component of this course, including effective radio communication and written communication for turnover reports.

The habits of a good Console Operator are emphasized, including the tasks and process checks that should be done at the beginning of each shift and the continuous monitoring and troubleshooting that is expected of the Console Operator.

A very brief introduction to Emergency Response is also included, in which the critical first steps needed to stabilize the unit are emphasized. Although this section is not intended to cover plant-specific training, it will reinforce the need for a quick and appropriate response as well as ways to maintain clear thinking in the midst of a process upset or emergency.

Finally, the role of support people for the Console Operator is discussed. It is important for the new Console Operator to understand the purpose and responsibilities of the process engineer, the design engineer, the planner, and other critical members of the team of people working together to keep the process operating safely and efficiently.
